Seeking God as a Busy Mama

I’m easily distracted.

After cleaning the house for an hour, I look around and wonder what I’ve ever done. I start with the goal of cleaning the kitchen, then have to change a dirty diaper. I see the clothes on the bedroom floor, so I start a load of laundry. The boys are fighting over a toy, so I stop to walk them through the issue when I notice that the dogs have no water. And on and on and on.

As a mom looking to grow her faith, seeking God with my whole heart seems impossible when I can’t even finish my to-do list.

What does seeking God throughout our day look like?

Seek the LORD and his strength;

seek his presence continually!

– 1 Chronicles 16:11 ESV

Seeking God Diligently

One of the words used for “seek” here, baqash, implies a diligent, careful seeking. It’s one that does not give up until it has found what it is seeking.

When you open your Bible, do you find yourself diligently seeking after God and His presence?

Do you continue to seek God, not giving up, desiring to know Him more?

“Now set your mind and heart to seek the LORD your God.”

– 1 Chronicles 22:19a ESV

This type of seeking is active and disciplined. You must set your heart and mind to seek God carefully.

Amid distractions from our to-do lists, this may mean continually turning our focus back to Christ. We have to take captive each mundane moment.

Mama, you may not always feel the emotions you expect when diligently seeking. There may be days and moments when you don’t feel like seeking God with your whole heart, but I promise that He is worth it.

“What is the best thing in life, bringing more joy, delight and contentment than anything else? Knowledge of God.”

What makes life worthwhile is having a big enough objective, something which catches our imagination and lays hold of our allegiance; and this the Christian has in a way that no other person has. For what higher, more exalted, and more compelling goal can there be than to know God?”

– Knowing God by J.I. Packer

Seeking God’s Face

What exactly are we seeking? What does it mean to seek God’s presence, especially if the Bible is full of verses about God never leaving us?

Other translations use the word “face” instead of presence. This same word is used to describe God’s presence in the Garden of Eden.

Can you imagine the indescribable joy of being face-to-face with God? This is more than God’s presence sustaining us (which is already unfathomable); but is an intimate relationship.

Let’s let this be the goal of pursuing spiritual disciplines.

Not to add another thing to our seemingly endless to-do list, but to let everything we think, say, and do be for His glory. To let our every action be one that diligently seeks to know Him and make Him known.

Stop and take a moment to consider what you seek when you pursue prayer, Bible reading, Scripture memorization, etc. Are you truly seeking God’s presence and glory?

Seeking God Throughout Your Day

We are called to be seeking God continually.

Not just when we sit down to read our Bible, but continually.

Not just when we pray before dinner, but continually.

Not just at church, but continually.

In the hard times, in the mundane moments, in times of uncertainty or transition, let us seek God’s face.

One way to seek God throughout the day is to meditate on His words. Don’t relegate thinking about the Bible to your Bible study, but learn how to think deeply throughout your day.

This meditation time, thinking deeply, naturally leads to praise, prayer, confession, and application.

“Meditation is the activity of calling to mind, and thinking over, and dwelling on, and applying to oneself, the various things that one knows about the works and ways and purposes and promises of God. It is an activity of holy thought, consciously performed in the presence of God, under the eye of God, by the help of God, as a means of communion with God.

Its purpose is to clear one’s mental and spiritual vision of God, and to let his truth make its full and proper impact on one’s mind and heart. It is a matter of talking to oneself about God and oneself; it is, indeed, often a matter of arguing with oneself, reasoning oneself out of moods of doubt and unbelief into a clear appre- hension of God’s power and grace.”

-Knowing God by J.I. Packer
